Project: Journey. History of the Maldives

August 07, 08

We have a new constitution, a new day and a responsible future ahead of us.

I’ve been working on a little project code-named JOURNEY

PROJECT JOURNEY

It’s a compilation of history of Maldives with facts (without fiction), in a scrollable-timeline for easy viewing. Historical points can be clicked for more details.

I look forward to enrich this as a community project, feel free to download (Save as file link) the XML file mvhistory.xml

Open the xml file in a text editor, to add, simply include an EVENT in the xml file, an example and explanation follows.

Example.

 <event
start=”250 BC”
title=”Earliest mention of the Maldives”
>
The earliest mention of the Maldives, is in ancient
Buddhist Jatakas and in Sri Lankan texts, which refer to events that occurred between 300
– 250 B.C. A reference in the Mahavansa indicates the arrival of a group of exiles in the
Maldives around the period 300 B.C., at the same time as another group arrived in Sri
Lanka.
</event>

Explanation.

<event
start=”(starting date)”
title=”(Title of event)”
>
(Description)
</event>

Mail me if you find it confusing.

Do make additions or corrections and mail the file, i’ll update the project with the new information.
I’ll also make a list of contributors and have it viewable online.

The case of the three zombies

August 05, 08

Two days back i had a visit to ADK Pharmacy, past midnight.

The vampires, caffeine hunters and those on withdrawals rushed by. Good thing we don’t have zombies.

Just as i entered ADK pharmacy, three teenage musketeers badhaween kids walked their way out. They wore worn clothes and looked miserably disappointed. The emptiness at the hour with each of their blood-shot eyes elevated a horrorful mood to the surrounding. Zombies! nah, just kids suffering from withdrawals.

I pointed the prescription to the Indian pharmacist who very busy scribbling at the time didn’t look at me but responded with an ‘yes’. It too was the same time the three dissapointed kids returned with much happy faces, wider eyes but still very blood-shot.

Kid#1:   I   t  ’   s     n   a   m   e    A  c t  i  f  y  Y  Y  y  y   y   y   y  y

Shocked Pharmacist: Actified !!!???

Kid#1:   N  o  O  O  o  o  o  o  .     A   c   t    i    f   Y  Y  Y  y  y  y

Shocked Pharmacist: We, we, we don’t have that, sorry.

Disappointed and worn, they left slowly, walking in swaying motion.

They were gone, the silence and the horror remained, zombies, i bet.

TVM talk show “Respecting the Elders”

June 21, 08

I just saw a talk show on TVM discussing “Respecting the elders”, in between interviewed with “elders” on the road promptly replying that they need “more respect” more more!

I’ll cut it short.

Respect is earned, not taken. Elders need to earn it, they do get a generation to build it. Let’s see a talk show discussing “Respecting the young” for a change.

Not being harsh to the old in any way, just trying to make a point.

Haveeru claims over one million hits per day

April 12, 08

It’s the second time I’ve read about the Haveeru Online hits per day. This time they’ve reached a staggering 1.3 million hits to that.

So what’s a hit on a website?

One hit means a thing (person, robot, crawler, or any other script) has requested for a file multiplied by it’s contents. Say a page has 5 pictures, 10 tables (yes it’s the era of CSS but some sites still do Tables) , 5 some other types of scripts = 20 hits on 1 request.

Lets compare this with forbes.com which got 11.6 million visitors in a month to their website
in late 2007, while Haveeru.com gets some 39 million hits a month.

A quote from haveeru news article in subject:

“Back then the highest number of visitors to the site was recorded on the 27th of December 2004 when it registered 611,634 hits”

Eg:

If 1 page in average is -> 20 hits (hits)
15 visitors browse (visits) an average of -> 10 pages (pageviews) each

That is 10 (pages) x 20 (hits) x 15 (visits) - > 3000 hits by 15 visitors.

A lot of us read haveeru.com, and it’s sad to see numbers on tech articles which can be misleading to some people who’d take ’hits’ for ’visitors’.

Have to be kept happy delivery servicers

March 22, 08

Since we moved to the sixth floor from the fourth floor one thing have changed. No, not the stairs. I don’t mind taking the stairs as much as people living in Vilingli don’t mind taking the ferri instead of complaing about a bridge. So it’s not the stairs that’s a problem to me, but it’s the stairs to some food delivery services that’s the problem.

First we decided to give tips to the delivery guy – that didn’t work. Then we decided to call the service manager and talk to him on any solutions. Naturally we asked if they were getting too much money and if they decided to cut down on services. After a few minutes of discussion we learned that the service manager had decided not to deliver higher floors as the food parcels gets stolen from his bicycle while he’s on stop for delivery.

It’s the rising crime rate that’s the problem and we should keep shut. - Actually not.

What we actually have here is a marketing error and not a problem about a hungry theif.

Instead of making the customer happy some restaurants here have decided to keep themselves and the delivery man happy. Customer no more is the king, the Seller is.

How about this:

Seller employs an assistant delivery man who sees no parcels gets stolen when the other goes delivering on stops – and charge extra for door-step-delivery for higher floors.

or

The unreachable floors for the got-too-much-money-seller and the have-to-be-kept-happy-delivery-guy should decide on giving a discount for having the food fetched from them and the customer decides from there onwards.

No?

Flash is Ok

February 05, 08

I’d like to share a very well designed website i encountered. Being a webdesigner/developer myself for a long time and holding a stubborn view on flash as a no good web design medium, i’ve finally changed my mind.

Take a look at Jonathan Yuen’s website.
